Tuesday 20th August – bike ***** Viking Trail near Snape – sunny periods.

After a bit of a hectic time lately with ten windsurfing sessions already this month it was nice to see a high pressure system coming meaning lighter winds and hopefully some sunny days and as I haven’t been on my bike since 26th July I thought it would be good to get away for a couple of nights in the campervan. I suggested we take the bikes over to Sandgalls Car Park and cycle one of our favourites, the Viking Trail a dedicated mountain bike single track through the pine woods, then go over to Snape Maltings to check out the wooden toys that Rob and Hannah liked on a recent visit. So this morning we woke to sunshine, Mag did the garden while I did my exercises, then breakfast and set off on the 25 mile trip arriving at midday, someone was in our spot but fortunately they were just leaving so we were soon set up in prim position, a sunny, secluded spot surrounded by bracken. After a relaxing lunch, reading, doxing and taking pics of dragon flies it was time to set off on the bikes to do the ten-mile trail. Leaving the van at 3.10 you head off through heath with the purple heather in full bloom before reaching the entrance to the well-marked trail. It is great fun riding the single track trying to avoid hitting the trees with tight switch backs and bumps both giggling like a couple of kids:) It is a bit up and down but fairly easy peddling but we were both pretty knackered by the time we had completed the trail nearly two hours later. It is very pretty here in the wood with a variety of trees from pines with a bed of bracken to silver birches. Wild life was a little thin on the ground, a few rabbits, a couple of squirrels and the odd bird including three buzzards but sadly no deer. For the most part we didn’t see anyone and were only caught up by a few mountain bikers as we neared the end including on really noisy one with two out of control dogs in tow! Back at the car park there were several VW vans with some pretty dedicated mountain bikers who like windsurfers spent as much time talking about it as doing it! After tea with the sun setting behind the trees we go for a walk through the trees and then across the heath being nearly dark by the time we reach the van. So, after a cuppa and desert it is time for an early night and fingers crossed for a sunny day tomorrow!

PS – I am having a little bit of trouble with my lovely new Fuji X-T1 as the pictures are coming out with a reddish hint ??? any ideas anyone ????
